Rocinha described by LA Times

Yeah guys, things are going more or less well and I'm enjoying my life. But besides my life there are many interesting things. I found some article about favela in LA Times  http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-brazil-favelas-20121125,0,4302500.story?page=1

I have to admint that this article is incredibly correct article. Right now favelados are complaining about police units and also cocaine isn't that easy to buy.

Other things is that after so called pacification of Rocinha and police's takeover went prices of houses up. Normal 2-3 bedrooms house close to public transportation is now around 100.000 BRL and the same house costed 30-40.000 BRL on time of my arrival 6 months ago. Over 120% of growth.

  1. WOW! You live in a favela? I would love to know more about you, why did you make this decision and how is day to day life.
I am brazilian, and have been living away from Brazil for 13 years, so i am very intrigued on your reasons to end up in rocinha!

  2. Hi Inale,
    welcome!
Everything is more or less described here on my blog. But situation is changing and I broke up with my girlfriend and I'm living on hotel where I'm working.

But frankly I really like Rocinha. It maybe doesn't look really good when you hear the stories about crime and drugs, but for me was really good place to stay. I don't have any problem to go there and spend some time there. People are friendly there.
And you know, almost all europeans who I know are going there for party or something. It definitely makes the image of Rio as much as Copacabana or Ipanema.

Anyway I strongly recommend to all tourists and also Brazilians to visit favela, just to know the place and to be sure that's not all true. You probably won't die, you won't be robbed and if you like festas you'll have funny time.

Feel free to ask me any question...

  4. Greetings Derpasaurus,
first I wanted to thank you for your contribution here on my blog. But still I don't think this is true. Nobody is forced to leave favela. If you have house there, probably it's price rose during the last years after the pacification, but for sure noone can take your house. The other thing is that even in Rocinha average salary rose as well. Average person is not in poor class but in lower middle class - hard working workers class.
About pacification - yeah there was some acts like this but there are many attempts from gangsters to go back there. Some of the favelas are not pacified anymore. Gangsters simply took over the place and living their lifes...

I don't know, but I don't feel like causing troubles in favela. If you'd read the blog you'd find that I was living there for couple months. And I don't really want to support anybody who doesn't deserve it.

I think that you've never been in favela and you have some very distorted image of what's going on there. If you really want to support a "poor" favela and not provide this kind of distorted images go there and live there for couple months. You'll see what is the place and people capable of.
